Understanding Urinary Health

Yes, it can sometimes be an awkward subject to delve into, however, Urinary Health problems are incredibly common, but why? Have you ever had a Urinary Tract Infection? Or, maybe you suffer with them quite often?

Fact: It's estimated that half of all women in the UK will suffer with a urinary tract infection at one time in their life!

Fact: Men can be sufferers too, with one out of 2000 males likely to develop one each year.

However, on the bright side, there are many things you can do to reduce your risk of developing a UTI!

Explain To Me: What Is The Urinary Tract?

It is basically where our bodies make and get rid of urine, and this incorporates the kidneys, the ureters, the bladder and the urethra.

A UTI can develop when areas of the tract become infected, often with bacteria, which could explain why it is such a common problem. People will either get the infection in the lower part of the tract, which involves the bladder and urethra, or the upper part, encompassing the kidneys and ureters.
Perhaps the most common UTI is Cystitis, which is an infection of the bladder, with predictions that almost all women will have cystitis at least once in their lifetime!

Knowing Your Symptoms:

The symptoms can differ depending on whether it’s lower or upper, this can help you determine what you are suffering with.

Lower?
  • Cloudy Urine
  • The need to urinate more frequently
  • Pain/discomfort when passing urine
  • Blood in your urine
  • Abdominal pain
Upper?
  • High temperature
  • Shivering
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

Ok, are there any Natural Remedies that can help?

Cranberry is one of the best remedies for a lower UTI; many people will drink it as a juice, but, ensure you choose an unsweetened one as additional sugar may only exacerbate symptoms! Plus, drink plenty of water to hydrate. Cranberry can also come in a powder or capsule form, this is also a great option to deal with the problem.
Bromelain, which comes from a pineapple extract, has also been shown to have an effect on UTIs.

Keep in mind, constipation can increase the risk of a UTI, so ensuring healthy digestion is very important. Probiotics or psyllium husks are good choices to maintain regularity.

Male Problems – The Prostate

It is estimated that 50% of men over the age of 50 suffer from an enlarged prostate. This condition, also known as BPH, can give rise to a number of inconvenient symptoms – most common: the need to get up at night to urinate.

Saw Palmetto, a traditional herbal medicine product is useful to use to relieve the urinary symptoms of BPH, exclusively based upon long-standing use as a remedy.
